I finally composed an official drifting guide for starters...
If you have any questions then ask me or one of the other members here.
Highway Drifting
Highway drifting is considered by some to be the easiest type of drifting, and it is the most common.
It is based in Atlanta, and sometimes Detroit. The reason some players drift on the freeways instead of using the fastest class A vehicles, i.e. the F1, is because if you have the right drift setup, it will allow your vehicle to become much faster than normal while drifting, thus allowing many lower class vehicles to beat class As on freeway races. To get started, follow the instructions below:
~1 ... Go to Arcade - Atlanta - Cruise, and choose any vehicle except for SUVs or bikes. (A tuner recommended) Turn off traffic, and make the weather clear.
~2 ... While in cruise, go to Pause - Options - Tune your vehicle. This is the main component to making your car faster, but very few players know about this.
~3 ... You should now see three adjustable bars in front of you. They say Drift Factor, Traction, and Friction Bias.
~4 ... If you want to make it simple, bring everything down to the lowest levels. Drifters refer to this setting as '0-0-0' (drift factor level-traction level-friction bias level)
*The Drift Factor controls the angle of your car, and how sensitive it steers while drifting. If you are a beginner, keep this at a minimum, as having too much (5+) can cause you to crash more. However, having more drift factor can slightly increase the acceleration by each level up, so choose the right drift factor that you feel comfortable with.
*Traction is not a very important factor, but having too much of it can slow your car down. In highway drifting, most like to set this to a low level, but some players think otherwise. I personally prefer to have it low though.
*Friction Bias is the component that makes your car gain speed while drifting, put simply, it controls how much the wheels are spinning against the ground. The lower the friction, the faster your car will be, but it will also make it much harder to control. Also note that different cars handle different types of tunes, most tuners use 0 friction bias though. Find the tune that's right for your car and your driving skills.
~5 ... If you are now using the tune 000, test it on the Atlanta freeway. If you steer left and right, it should make your car accelerate faster, but that isn't the whole equation yet.
~6 ... The next step is to switch to manual transmission. Go to Pause - Options - Controller Mappings. I use the following main controls for drifting:
L1 - Shift Up (used to be in air control)
L2 - Shift Down (used to be look back)
R1 - Handbrake (kept same)
R2 - In Air Control (used to be nitrous, you won't be needing this)
The rest are kept the same.
~7 ... You'll want to be drifting in the gear below the top gear (if your car had 6 gears, then use gear 5). Test your car out again on the freeway, this time manually switching gears up to the one below the top gear. You'll know when to switch when the gear indicator light comes on, when it does, immediately press L1 or the upshift control you are using.
When you start to lose control of your car, quickly tap (NOT hold) the handbrake, and steer in the other direction. Continually steer left and right while doing this will result in a very fast car. If you do this right, you should now be able to do a full lap around the freeway, while about matching a McLaren F1.
~8 ... Once you've mastered the steps above, you can now move on to the more complicated parts that will make your car yet even faster and easier to handle. Now go to the garage - performance shop - tires. Choose stock tires, this will make your car slide with ease instead of making it grippy with level 3 tires. Now that you have stock tires, go to body shop, and make sure your rims are the largest size possible, your tire profile is 1, your tire width is 355mm, and your ride height is stock, or close to stock height.
Now you can be done, but if you want while your in cruise, you can go to pause - options - game options, and set the steering sensitivity. This just controls how sensitive your car is, steering to one side or the other. I prefer to use +10, but you can choose which ever you like.
~9 ... Here are some more tips:
*The Saleen SR is the most commonly used drift car, and the fastest.
*The Four-Twelve, Zonda, and S7 are the fastest class A drift vehicles, their speed is similar to that of a drifting SR. Class A vehicles are capable of accelerating faster, but they fail to keep their speed up because they cannot keep long drifts.
*There are very few SUVs and Bikes that are able to highway drift, but the main two are the Ram SRT10 and the Skully.
*All of the class B tuners are excellent at highway drifting, and all get similar times.
*Using wheelie bars on muscle cars can help you get quicker starts.
*When at the start of the race, swerve to the far left or right and come in through the first turn at the largest angle possible, it will make you gain speed much quicker than drifting straight.
*Drift at about a 45* - 70* degree angle, or your vehicle will easily spin out.
*Switching to Gear 6 when under overpasses (in the air), and switching to gear 5 on the way out will help keep up the speed
*If you are aiming for the fastest time possible, start out the race switching to your drifting gear with at the same time, a nitrous boost to get to max speed very quicky. Use the rest of the nitrous under overpasses, and try taking the shortcut on the upper-right side of the map.
*Steer to the right or left or use weight transfer to shift your car sideways when coming out of overpasses, this keeps your speed up and the drift going.
*Don't try to knock players out of the race online, they will get mad!
*Never use zone, roar, or agro while drifitng offline. Using zone in a drift will break the drift and slow you down, and agro or roar will just interfere as well.
